Crown London Aspinalls Club History

As you pass the iconic brass elephant and enter the elegant reception, you are stepping into history. John Aspinall’s idiosyncratic nature is still reflected in the décor of certain areas of the club. His passion for offering comfort and privacy whilst enjoying a premium gaming experience is just as important today as it was in the 1960s.

The White Elephant Club

In the 1960s, 28 Curzon Street was home to The White Elephant Club, a popular dining destination for Hollywood stars and London’s elite. The owner at the time was Leslie Linder, a well-known agent and actor. Antonio Mancini, a friend of John Aspinall, later took ownership of the club in the 1990’s.

John Aspinall then acquired the premises from Mancini in 1992 and converted the property into a luxurious private gaming club frequented by the port and wine set. With a nod to the club’s origins, the brass elephant still guards the door as well as reflecting John Aspinall’s passion for conservation.

Aspinalls

The late John Aspinall was a charismatic and influential figure, renowned within the London gaming establishment. He used the success of his gaming enterprise to fund the creation of two country estates/zoos for gorillas and tigers.

He was instrumental in the passing of the Betting and Gaming Act of 1960 that opened the door for legalised casinos. John Aspinall opened the Clermont Club on Berkeley Square, Mayfair, in 1962 and later allowed his friend Mark Birley to establish the famous Annabel’s nightclub in the basement. For the next three decades, Aspinalls’ name became synonymous with premium gaming and exclusivity.
In 1992, Aspinalls Club opened in its present location on Curzon Street, establishing itself as London’s premier casino and private member’s club. The interiors of the club were plush and decorated in the style of a country mansion.

Crown Resorts

In May 2011, Aspinalls joined the global Crown Resorts group, becoming Crown London Aspinalls. The liaison with Crown Resorts brings an international dimension to the Aspinalls name.

The famous London club now joins a suite of world-class hotel and casino resorts in Melbourne, Perth, and soon to be Sydney.
